Workman Publishing Adopts Lexile Measures
MetaMetrics Collaborates with Respected Publisher to Measure Titles Using The Lexile Framework for Reading
NEW YORK & DURHAM, N.C. - Nov. 5, 2008 -MetaMetrics®, Inc., developer of the widely adopted Lexile Framework® for Reading, and Workman Publishing Company today announced an agreement to provide Lexile® measures for many of the publisher's imprints. Workman joins the growing list of more than 150 trade and textbook publishers who offer Lexile measures as a way to connect readers with books based on their abilities and interests.
"Workman offers books and other educational materials that are simultaneously serious, fun and engaging," said Michael Rockliff, the company's director of library sales & marketing. "By adding Lexile measures to our imprints, we are providing a powerful and proven tool for connecting readers with appropriate reading materials."
The two companies kicked off the text measurement project this summer by measuring books from some of Workman's most popular imprints, including titles from Algonquin Books, Storey Publishing, Play Bac, Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers and Workman, itself. The new titles with Lexile measures have been added to the Lexile Book Database and "Find a Book" Web site. Educators, parents and students use these free Web resources to quickly and easily select books that match both the student's interests and reading ability.
"We are pleased to collaborate with Workman Publishing to add its original titles to the growing number of materials with Lexile measures," said MetaMetrics President Malbert Smith III, Ph.D. "When students are engaged in reading materials that match their abilities and on topics that interest them, they build literacy skills and develop a lifelong love of learning."
Recognized as the most widely adopted reading measure, Lexile measures are used at the school level in various capacities in all 50 states. Each year, more than 28 million Lexile measures are reported from state and national assessments, classroom assessments and reading programs, representing about half of U.S. students.
The Lexile Framework is an educational tool that connects readers with reading materials using a common measure called a Lexile. What makes the Lexile Framework unique, and what has led to its widespread adoption, is that it measures both reading ability and text difficulty on the same developmental scale. When used together, Lexile reader measures and Lexile text measures allow educators, parents and students to find books and other materials that meet and challenge a reader's unique ability and interests. Currently, more than 115,000 books, 80 million articles and 60,000 Web sites have Lexile measures, and the number of resources with Lexile measures continues to grow.
