The Lexile measure of a book refers to its text difficulty only. A Lexile measure
does not take the subject matter or content of a book into consideration. Lexile
measures are based on two well-established predictors of how difficult a text is
to comprehend: word frequency and sentence length. Many factors other than these
affect the relationship between a reader and a book, including its content, its
design and layout, and the age and interests of the reader. The Lexile measure is
a good starting point in your book selection process, with these other factors then
being considered.
The Lexile Book Database is a list of books with Lexile measures. MetaMetrics does
not choose the books to be measured: the book publishers do. MetaMetrics only works
with reputable academic and trade publishers, and displays the developmental level
of books when the publishers provide them. In no way should one assume that the
books in our database are recommended books, nor should the books or database search
results be taken as a suggested reading list. Parents and educators should preview
books to make sure they are at the appropriate developmental level for a reader
and also meet their own community standards.
